If you are looking for the best electricity deal, you will find that the market offers different types of tariff designed to suit different consumption habits and needs. At Selectra, we particularly recommend two main options: a fixed-price tariff, which keeps the same cost per kWh 24 hours a day, or a time-of-use tariff, which offers lower prices at night and at weekends.
The best choice will depend on your consumption habits. If you would like to find out which suits you best, you can request a free personalised study and discover which option will help you save the most.

Frequently asked questions about the cheapest electricity tariffs and best deals in Spain
How do I find the cheapest or best tariff in a more personalised way?
The best way to find a tariff tailored to your consumption is to use the Selectra electricity and gas tariff comparator. This comparator is based on the Selectra Score, a system that evaluates each tariff beyond price, taking into account factors such as green energy, lock-in periods, and customer reviews. This way, you will be able to see not only the cheapest options, but also the best-rated ones according to your real needs.
How do I choose the best electricity tariff?
First, check your contracted power: many households overpay because they have more power than they actually need. Second, compare tariffs at least once a year, as companies regularly revise prices which can push your bill up; comparing regularly ensures you stay on the best available deal.
Finally, look carefully at promotional discounts: some discounts may seem attractive, but if the base price is high or they come with lock-in conditions, they may not be worth it in the long run.
What is the cheapest tariff if I have solar panels?
Having solar panels allows you to use the energy you generate yourself first, reducing your dependence on grid electricity and lowering your bill. If you produce more than you consume and export the surplus to the grid, you can offset part of your consumption and save even more.
You can compare electricity tariffs for households with solar panels and use our calculator to estimate how much you could save each month.
What should I look for when choosing cheap tariffs for second homes?
When it comes to saving on electricity, almost everyone focuses on the price per kWh, but there is another equally important factor: the power charge. This fixed cost is paid every month even if you consume no electricity, and it can make a significant difference to what you pay just for having a supply.
If you have a second home or a property used occasionally, the ideal option is a tariff with a low power charge. This way you avoid overpaying during the months when the property is barely used. Bear in mind that consumption in these properties tends to concentrate at off-peak hours and weekends — the cheapest periods.
How does Selectra calculate prices?
At Selectra we calculate price estimates using average Spanish household consumption data: 270 kWh per month and 4 kW contracted power. For time-of-use tariffs, we weight consumption according to real usage patterns: 49% off-peak, 26% mid-peak, and 25% peak for three-period tariffs.
When the user enters their actual consumption in the comparator, the calculations are fully personalised to provide the most accurate estimate possible. All prices shown include taxes and regulated charges. You can consult our full methodology here.
Can I sign up for electricity with just a passport, without a NIE?
Yes, most companies accept a passport as a valid form of identification. A NIE makes the process easier, but it is not compulsory to sign up. If you have just arrived in Spain and do not yet have one, you can still sign up.
How long does switching electricity company take?
Switching company is free and takes between 1 and 20 days, depending on the supplier. The switch takes effect at the next billing cycle close, at which point your previous company will send you a final bill covering consumption up to that date.
Throughout the entire process there is no interruption to your supply and you do not need to do anything: your new company handles all the paperwork.
Will my electricity be cut off when I switch company?
No. Switching company is an administrative procedure and does not involve any interruption to your supply. The electricity network remains the same; all that changes is who bills you.
Is there a penalty for leaving my current company?
It depends on your contract. Tariffs with no minimum term, which are the most common in the Spanish free market, carry no cancellation penalty. Check your current contract or contact us and we will help you verify this for free.
Can I set up a direct debit from a bank account in another EU country?
Yes, any European IBAN is valid for setting up a direct debit for your electricity bill in Spain. You do not need to open a Spanish bank account to sign up or to pay.
Is Iberdrola the best option for foreigners in Spain?
Iberdrola is one of the best-known companies in Spain and stands out for its network of physical offices and in-person customer service. However, being the most well-known does not mean being the cheapest. According to our estimates, companies such as Naturgy, Endesa, Repsol, and TotalEnergies offer more competitive tariffs.
What is the CUPS code and what is it for?
The CUPS (Código Universal del Punto de Suministro) is a code of 20 to 22 characters beginning with "ES" that uniquely identifies your electricity connection point. You will find it on any electricity bill. Your new supplier will ask for it when processing the switch, so having it to hand speeds up the process.
I have just moved into a flat with no electricity. Is that the same as switching company?
No. If the supply has been deactivated, you need to request a new connection, not a company switch. The process is different: it may require an electrical installation certificate and the timescales may be longer. Contact a Selectra adviser to be guided through your specific situation.
Could I be entitled to a discount on my electricity bill?
There are two main forms of support you may be entitled to if you meet the income and consumption requirements:
- Social Bonus (Bono social eléctrico): A discount on your electricity bill for low-income households. There are two levels: a 42.5% discount for vulnerable consumers and a 57.5% discount for those in severe vulnerability. If you have just arrived in Spain and think you may meet the requirements, it is worth applying.
- Thermal Social Bonus (Bono social térmico): An additional financial benefit covering heating, hot water, and cooking costs, regardless of the thermal system you use. It is paid during the first quarter of the year and the amount depends on the degree of vulnerability and the climate zone in which you live. To access it, you must have the PVPC tariff contracted with a power of less than 10 kW and already be a beneficiary of the Social Bonus.
